What is an Agile Assessment?

Agile Assessment

For organizations that are adopting or already using Agile methodologies, Agile assessments provide critical insights into team dynamics, product line maturity, and enterprise-wide agility. This holds true whether team members are working on-site or remotely.

Agile assessments empower leaders by uncovering roadblocks to remove and pinpointing opportunities for growth. As a result, Agile teams can perform at their highest potential, and organizations can thrive throughout their transformation journey.

Why Agile Assessments Matter

Agile assessments serve as a strategic tool for organizations to:

  • Establish a baseline for Agile adoption and track progress over time

  • Measure the health and performance of Agile teams

  • Evaluate alignment with Agile transformation goals and identify areas where additional support is needed

  • Recognize team and individual mastery of Agile competencies

  • Focus teams on their strengths and areas for improvement

  • Identify patterns across roles (e.g., Scrum Masters, Product Owners) and provide targeted coaching and training

These insights are crucial for achieving long-term Agile success.

What Agile Assessments Measure

An Agile team can be assessed either by specific practices or broader competency frameworks, depending on the organization’s goals. Using a standardized framework helps maintain consistency in language, metrics, and maturity benchmarks across teams.

At AgilityInsights, we primarily use the TeamHealth® Radar, which measures five core competencies:

  • Foundation

  • Clarity

  • Performance

  • Culture

  • Leadership

Each competency is assessed using a maturity scale—Crawl, Walk, Run, and Fly—with practical examples at each stage to ensure teams evaluate themselves consistently and accurately.

We also offer assessments focused on various key areas, including:

  • DevOps maturity

  • Lean product development

  • Enterprise Business Agility®

  • SAFe® framework alignment

  • Talent Development for roles such as Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Release Train Engineers, and Agile Coaches

How the Agile Assessment Process Works

We integrate assessments as part of a strategic retrospective process. This process consists of three essential steps:

  1. Team members complete the assessment individually.

  2. Teams analyze results using the TeamHealth® Radar and identify growth areas.

  3. Teams create actionable growth plans to foster continuous improvement.

We recommend conducting these assessments during Virtual Big Room Retrospectives (VBRRs)—a scalable approach that enables multiple teams to align and assess together in real time.

For the process to be effective, teams must feel psychologically safe to share their honest feedback. At the same time, leaders must actively remove obstacles. By doing so, they foster an atmosphere of trust and transparency, which is essential for sustained Agile growth.

Building a Measure-and-Grow Program

A measure-and-grow program allows you to conduct recurring Agile assessments across teams and roles. This ongoing cycle:

  • Monitors team progress

  • Highlights trends over time

  • Helps allocate resources for training and coaching more effectively

By establishing this program, organizations can ensure they are making continual improvements and adapting quickly to changes in team needs.
